As the term suggests, the Masala Bhangra workout is a peppy exercise routine in a high energy dance format. It modernises the Punjabi Bhangra dance by blending its conventional beats with Bollywood moves drawn from popular Hindi dance numbers. And the experience is exhilarating to say the least.
The unique workout combines cardiovascular activities with loads of fun and is suitable for all age groups and fitness levels.
The workout is an AFAA (Aerobics and Fitness Association of America) approved fitness programme, originally created and devised by Sarina Jain.
Features: The uniqueness of this workout lies in mixing heavy duty cardiovascular activities with the pleasure derived from dancing. It has no age limit as the steps can be modified to suit everyone. The classes usually run for 45-60 minutes and with the music being based on dhol beats, Masala Bhangra helps build up a liberating workout session. It is the only Indian dance specialised fitness workout at the moment. The beauty of this exercise regime is that one need not be a dancer to enroll for a Masala Bhangra fitness programme. It is a group workout, which burns over 500 calories an hour. And a very special aspect of this workout style is that men enjoy it as much as women, unlike other dance fitness workouts.
Benefits: Besides a host of cardiovascular gains, this workout tones up the entire body, helps maintain correct posture and strengthens the core.
Regional flavours: This new form of dancercise blends an array of super electrifying folk dance moves from Punjab with the adrenaline pumping Bollybiscs. In fact, the ambience of a regular Masala Bhangra class feels like a typical Indian wedding or sangeet ceremony.
Requirements: One doesn’t need any specific prop or accessory for a Masala Bhangra class, except for a pair of dance friendly shoes (optional), a water bottle and of course, a towel napkin as there will be a lot of sweat inducing steps. Designed as an aerobics class, a regular workout begins with an 8-10 minute warm up ritual, followed by a bell curved cardio section where several moves are added one at a time and then all are synchronised into one single continuous choreographed sequence. The cooling down period in the end lasts for about 8-10 minutes and the closing pose is usually a typical Indian squatting posture on the floor, to seek blessings of the ground as a performance stage, the guru or the teacher and God.
Domestic and universal popularity: Masala Bhangra trainers, or ambassadors as they are called, are reaching out to most metropolitan cities in India.
Besides Mumbai, classes are conducted in Delhi, Bengaluru, Pune, Coimbatore, Raipur, Ludhiana, Kota, Hyderabad and Raipur. The routine will soon branch out to other locations as well.
Internationally, Masala Bhangra has gathered a lot of momentum not only in the US but also in Europe, Middle East, Japan, Indonesia and Malaysia. It has been recognised among the top five fitness trends till date.
