    Does going to the gym sound boring to you? How about if you get your favourite dhol beats and Punjabi tracks to dance to? How does the feeling of being in a wedding sangeet party feel? Then, here comes a fresh and exciting addition to the world of fitness–The Masala Bhangra Workout. A new form of ‘dancercise’ it mixes music and dance of modern Bhangra with Bollywood styles to create a fresh and exciting way to stay fit.

    Today, Masala Bhangra is one of the top 5 workout videos in the US. Nivedita Jayaram Pawar spoke to fitness trainer Shalini Bhargava, who was trained by the creator of Masala Bhangra–Sarina Jain, on the how to dance your way to fitness.

    Q: What’s all this fuss about Masala Bhangra?

    A: The Masala Bhangra Workout is derived from two Indian words: Masala, which means ‘spicy’ in Hindi, and Bhangra, which is a traditional folk dance from the northern state of Punjab, India. It’s an exercise dance routine that modernizes the high-energy folk dance of Bhangra by blending traditional Bhangra dance steps and the exhilaration of Bollywood moves. This unique dance mixes cardiovascular with fun, and is suitable for all ages and fitness levels.

    Q: Do I need to be a dancer for this workout?

    A: The beauty of this workout is the fact that one does not need to be a dancer to be eligible for Masala Bhangra. It’s a 45-60 minutes class and the music is based on dhol beats, which help in making it a high energy workout.

    Q: How many calories can one burn in a session?


    A: This group activity is fun and burns more than 500 calories in an hour!. It’s the only Indian dance fitness workout that makes it more special.

    Q: What are the benefits of Masala Bhangra?

    A: Besides the cardiovascular gains, this workout also tones up the entire body, helps to maintain correct posture and strengthens the core. This new form of dancercise blends the high-energy folk dance from Punjab with adrenaline pumping Bollywood moves. The uniqueness lies in the fact that the class feels like a typical Indian wedding or sangeet. It’s fun and enjoyment all the way.

    Q: What are the things one needs to bring to a class?

    A: You need not bring anything to class, except shoes (optional) and a water bottle and of course a towel napkin as there will be lot of sweat!

    Q: How did you get into this form of fitness training?


    A: My passion for fitness and dancing and trying different kinds of workouts led me to this workout and after attending a workshop with Sarina Jain at the world’s largest Fitness Convention–Ideas–I got hooked on to Masala Bhangra. And with it also came a sense of pride of being Indian as this is the only Indian fitness workout, besides Yoga, which is internationally recognised.

    Q: Where can one learn Masala Bhangra in Mumbai? Is it available in other parts of the country too?

    A: Masala Bhangra trainers or Ambassadors, as they are called, are reaching most metros in India. Besides Mumbai, there are classes in Delhi, Bangalore, Pune, Coimbatore, Raipur, Ludhiana and Kota. Soon there will be classes in other cities as well.
