What Makes Music and Exercise the Perfect Combo?

Exercise is a part of our daily routine and if anything makes it soothing, it is music. Music and exercise are a perfect combination.

Music is not only entertaining when you listen to it, it also increases one's productivity. Studies have found that when we listen to music while we workout, the body utilises seven per cent less oxygen.

One of the greatest benefits of music is that it helps you divert your mind from the physical activity you're performing. It affects the nerves in your brain. When the music enters your ears, it's transformed into vibrations and thus affects our input into the movement.

Every individual connects emotionally to music. Sometimes, when you're listening to music, a certain song can remind you of a certain memory while another song might make you run faster. All of this affects your workout productivity.

Music tends to make you move instead of sit. If you hear a song in the background, you might notice your knee bouncing to the rhythm. That's your body wanting to move to the beat.

People move to rhythm: For example, a runner will listen to fast music to move faster. The tempo of the song has an impact on your pace. Synchronizing your movement to the music enables you to perform more efficiently, which results in greater endurance. Many athletes listen to fast-tempo music, which helps them move faster.

Music also affects our beats per minute (BPM) and is used to reach a certain heart rate zone. In the fitness and endurance world, you need to hit a certain BPM to reach peak potential. In Yoga/Pilates, music is used to ease the heart rate and soothe the mind. Music helps calm the body, achieve balance, and move with ease. Similarly, runners usually want to pick up their pace; tunes with faster beats allow their feet to move faster and more efficiently.

Music and exercise are almost simultaneous for most people. Music and exercise is a combination that not only soothes the mind but also makes you fresher. It's a rejuvenating winning pair.

Music in the tempo range of 120 to 145 BPM is used for almost all forms of exercise. This range appears to represent the optimal level of stimulation for exercise.

  • Aerobics - 160 BPM
  • Spinning - 175 BPM
  • Walking-135 to 140 BPM
  • Running-150 to 175 BPM
  • Cycling-135 to 180 BPM
  • Aerobics-120 to 160 BPM
  • Step aerobics-100 to 140 BPM
  • Masala Bhangra -110 to 130 BPM
  • Zumba- BPM differs with each song,ranging from 110 to 150 BPM

There's a playlist for every workout. Nowadays, you have an array of music apps on your phone to select from. Apps like 8tracks let you pick a mood and then craft a plethora of playlists for you.

So rather than looking for a workout buddy, why not finally use that iPod?

Music has also known to have the following benefits while exercising:

  • Affects blood pressure
  • Changes the metabolic rate
  • Reduces physical and mental stress
  • Reduces fatigue

All of these things aid the flow of energy in the human body.
